Prepare for Hurricane Season 2025: Insurance and Safety Tips for Texans

Austin, TX — June 2, 2025 — The 2025 hurricane season is officially here. With predictions of above-normal Atlantic hurricane season in 2025, Texans are urged to start preparing now to protect their homes, families, and finances. According to Phil Klotzbach, senior research scientist at Colorado State University, the upcoming season is expected to see increased storm activity, making it critical for all Texans to take necessary precautions in advance. 

The Insurance Council of Texas (ICT) is encouraging residents to take action and review their insurance policies, understand their coverage, and implement safety measures before the start of the hurricane season. Here are some key tips to help you prepare: 

• Review Your Insurance Policies – Make sure you have enough coverage for your home and personal property. Be sure your policy includes protection against wind and hail damage, which can result from hurricanes. 

• Buy Flood Insurance Through the NFIP – Flooding is one of the most devastating effects of hurricanes. Be sure to purchase flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) well before the 30-day waiting period ends. 

• Know Your Deductibles – Understand your hurricane and windstorm deductibles. These can be different than standard home insurance deductibles, and it’s important to know whether you can afford them in case of a claim. 

• Make a Home Inventory – Document your personal property to make filing an insurance claim easier after a disaster. Photos or videos of your items, along with a list of estimated values, can help streamline the claims process. 

• Prepare Your Home and Emergency Kit – Secure windows and doors, trim trees, and ensure your home is ready for storm conditions. Also, assemble an emergency kit with essentials like water, food, flashlights, and important documents. 

“Being prepared is the best defense against the challenges hurricanes bring,” said Rich Johnson, director of communications and public affairs for the Insurance Council of Texas. “The more you do in advance, the more you can reduce the stress and potential damage a hurricane may cause.” 

Texans should start their preparations now—before the season hits its peak in late summer and fall. Taking the time to ensure your insurance is up to date and your home is protected can save you from costly and stressful situations in the event of a storm.
